Murphy Votes to Restore Buy America Requirements for EV Chargers

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. issued the following statement after voting in favor of S.J. Res. 38, to overturn the Federal Highway Administration’s rule relating to ‘Waiver of Buy America Requirements for Electric Vehicle Chargers.’ Doing so would remove China from our supply chain for electric vehicle charger construction: 

"President Biden's myopic climate agenda is putting China first and American drivers and workers last," said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. "Democrats deceptively used the Inflation Reduction Act to pass $1.2 trillion in green subsidies and subsequently waived Buy America provisions that Chinese corporations are set to cash in on. American taxpayer dollars should not be used to deepen our reliance on foreign adversaries, especially when it comes to critical technologies." 

Background
“Buy America” provisions require federal infrastructure projects – such as the construction of chargers for electric vehicles – to obtain 55 percent of construction materials from domestic sources and be completely manufactured in the United States to support American industry and independence from foreign economies. 

In February 2023, President Biden’s Federal Highway Administration issued a waiver to suspend these requirements.
