NC Voter ID Requirement Reinstated: Student and Government IDs Green-Lighted for Use

The State Board of Elections in North Carolina has approved ninety-nine types of student and government IDs for use in voting, in line with the state's new voter ID requirement. IDs from all UNC System public universities and many private institutions, including Duke University and Davidson College, are included. These approved IDs are valid for voting through December 31, 2024.

After the state's Supreme Court reinstated North Carolina's voter ID requirement, universities and government agencies were allowed to apply for approval, which required that IDs include a photo and expiration date. Six institutions were denied approval due to their IDs lacking expiration dates but can reapply before the 2024 elections.

From the 2023 municipal elections, all voters will have to show an ID to vote, including a photocopy of an acceptable ID for mail voting. Alongside the newly approved IDs, voters can also use a driver's license, passport, or a free photo ID card from their county board of elections.
