Letter to the Editor: A critical issue surrounding the Medicare Part D program

To the Editor:

There is a critical issue surrounding the Medicare Part D program, specifically as it relates to coverage.

Currently, Medicare Part D fails to provide coverage for FDA-approved anti-obesity medications, despite the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) acknowledging the importance of addressing obesity as a significant public health concern.

Due to a provision within Part D, drugs labeled as "weight loss" or "weight gain" agents are excluded from coverage. This omission represents a glaring gap in our healthcare system that requires immediate attention.

Obesity impacts the lives of millions of Americans, from increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers to reduced quality of life and higher healthcare costs.

FDA-approved anti-obesity medications offer a viable solution for individuals struggling with weight management, but are unavailable to numerous Americans due to this provision.

I hope North Carolina's congressional delegation, both Senate and House, realize this situation is dire and will co-sponsor The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act.   This bill will provide life-saving medications to help millions of Americans overcome obesity and live longer, healthier, more productive lives.
