At one time, if you were to reach for a shortcut to all things American, you might reach for Mom, Apple Pie, the Flag, all caps because they represented some almost sacrosanct ideals. In some cases, you might even throw in Libraries, because nothing said freedom like the ability to walk into a public library and read about all things American.
Robinson, in a news conference Tuesday, Oct. 12, said he wants to get books, which he says depicts “filth,” out of some school libraries. Robinson made earlier statements that he wants to remove books such as “George,” “Lawn Boy” and “Gender Queer,” which have sexually explicit content depicting gay and transgender people, from schools across the state.
Five years after House Bill 2 put North Carolina at the center of national controversy, cities in the state’s liberal enclaves are once again discussing discrimination and the LGBT community. Six cities and counties in North Carolina have passed ordinances that designate sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classes, and LGBT advocates are now pushing two dozen more to follow suit.
