RALEIGH - North Carolina has received $45.2 million from Meta, the first installment of a child-safety settlement expected to bring the state at least $451 million through 2035.
North Carolina is slated to receive at least $451 million, and up to $645 million, under a multistate Meta settlement announced by Attorney General Jeff Jackson.
Opening arguments began in a multistate case in which North Carolina and other states accuse Meta of designing addictive platforms for children and misleading the public.
A federal judge rejected an attempt by Meta to dismiss the lawsuit that Attorney General Josh Stein and other bipartisan attorneys general filed in 2023. The attorneys general sued Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, alleging that it designed its social media platforms to hook children and teenagers and deceived people about the apps’ harms.
On this matter, I’m inclined to believe the company (now called Meta by its CEO and nearly a dozen other human beings). That doesn’t make my latest encounter with the social-media giant any less frustrating, however.
