Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley has formally announced she’s running for U.S. Senate on the Democratic side in hopes of replacing three-term Republican incumbent Richard Burr, who is retiring. The announcement was not unexpected, as Carolina Journal reported Beasley’s plans in February.
N.C. Superior Court Judge David Lee, the presiding jurist in the decades-long Leandro lawsuit, said at a hearing Tuesday, April 13 that he won’t tell lawmakers how to spend money on public education.
The N.C. Supreme Court has affirmed the General Assembly’s control over state spending decisions. A new 6-1 ruling rejects the governor’s attempt to bypass lawmakers in determining how federal block grants should be spent.

On Saturday, Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley conceded the race for Chief Justice to fellow Justice Paul Newby. The race came down to about 400 votes out of 5.4 million as recounts and court challenges delayed the victory declaration since the November 3rd election.
The ballots have been counted. Twice. Some will be counted again. Maybe all of them. Even after that, North Carolinians may not know who will be the chief justice of the state Supreme Court in 2021.
All 100 North Carolina counties have completed the statewide recount in the North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice contest. After the machine recount, Republican Paul Newby leads Democrat Cheri Beasley by 401 votes out of nearly 5.4 million cast in that race. “The recount showed minor differences from canvassed vote totals, but did not change the outcome of the contest,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board of Elections.
