Greensboro Congressman Mark Walker announces he's after Burr's seat
The 2022 election starts with Greensboro Congressman Mark Walker throwing his hat in the ring to seek the seat held now by Sen. Richard Burr. Walker shared his announcement in a video with Fox News.
“I’m running for the United States Senate because serving others is my life and I have the experience to fight and win in Washington.” Rep. Mark Walker.
Walker is the first to launch a campaign to replace Sen. Richard Burr who is retiring after three terms.
Walker won a runoff for the Republican primary in 2014 to represent the state’s 6th Congressional District, 51-year-old Walker was then elected to the head of the conservative Republican Study Committee three years later.
“I think our record speaks for itself and that’s what we’re going to run on,” Walker said in an interview with Fox News. “I think we offer a rare commodity, which is a conservative, but also someone who builds bridges. In a toxic, very partisan arena, I believe that’s important to be able to find a way to do that.”
The race has the potential to be one of the most expensive in the state’s history. Nearly $300 million was spent on the Tillis Cunningham race in 2020.
“We’ve already been told it will probably be the most expensive Senate race in U.S. history, topping $300 million,” Walker said. “I’ve never been one to build relationships based on some kind of financial transaction. You want to do I because you want to help and serve people.”
Walker takes aim at the current state of Washington.
“Washington has lost its mind. Job-killing regulations. Green New Deal. Defund the police and our military. Seriously? I’m proud of my record taking on the radicals as well as the establishment,” said Walker.
The Fox News video included endorsements from supporters including Richard Sneed, the principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and Greensboro pastor Odell Cleveland.
“I’m grateful to already have the full endorsements of the sheriffs throughout central North Carolina. I will continue to work on behalf of our veterans, our families, and our men and women on the frontlines.”
