Keeping North Carolina Seniors Healthy Means Protecting Medicare Advantage
By: Former State Representative Linda Hunt Williams
Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about making government work better and lowering costs for Americans. As a former state lawmaker, I know that real solutions come from strengthening programs that deliver results—especially for seniors. Medicare Advantage is one of those programs. More than 34 million Americans, including 1 million North Carolinians, rely on it for high-quality, affordable health care. Now more than ever, we must protect it.
One of the things I always heard from my constituents was that Medicare Advantage provides them better health care at lower costs than fee-for-service Medicare—and it’s no surprise that over 50% of American seniors choose the program. It not only outperforms fee-for-service Medicare in quality measures but also includes comprehensive benefits like dental, vision, and hearing care, as well as prescription drug coverage.
But what makes Medicare Advantage so effective is how it keeps seniors healthier while controlling costs. It focuses on preventive care—offering early screenings, coordinated care, and disease management programs that catch health issues before they become expensive emergencies. This approach reduces hospitalizations and lowers overall health care costs, saving money for both seniors and taxpayers. It also provides financial security at a time when seniors need it most. With inflation driving up costs, Medicare Advantage caps out-of-pocket expenses, helping to keep medical costs predictable.
While Medicare Advantage delivers comprehensive care and financial protections for seniors, the program has faced two consecutive years of cuts, placing immense pressure on benefits and coverage options. These cuts make it harder for seniors to access the care they need. Washington must change course.
As President Trump takes office and works to lower costs, I am enthusiastic that his administration and our Congressional members will work to protect and strengthen Medicare Advantage. I’ve worked alongside leaders who are committed to serving North Carolinians, and I know we have strong advocates in Washington. President Trump, Senator Thom Tillis, and Representatives Richard Hudson and Greg Murphy have the opportunity to restore funding for Medicare Advantage and ensure it remains strong for years to come.
Seniors can’t afford to wait. Congress must act now—not just to protect today’s seniors, but to safeguard Medicare Advantage for future generations.
