Op-Ed: Embracing Innovation and Economic Growth During North Carolina Drive Electric Week

As the former Executive Director of the NCGOP and a proud conservative, I have always believed in the values of freedom, innovation, and economic opportunity. Here in North Carolina, we’ve long understood that to secure our future, we need to focus on policies that drive job creation, economic growth, and responsible stewardship of our natural resources.  That’s why I am excited to celebrate North Carolina Drive Electric Week—an event that showcases how our state is at the forefront of innovation in the electric vehicle (EV) space.

For years, North Carolina has been recognized as a leader in manufacturing, technology, and business-friendly policies. Now, we’re building on that legacy by embracing the clean energy and electric vehicle industries, which are bringing new jobs and investments to our state. Our state’s business-friendly climate, coupled with a skilled workforce and strategic location in the Southeast, makes us an ideal place for companies to invest in electric vehicles and clean energy technologies.

Take, for example, Highland Electric Fleets, a company that is making a real impact on both our economy and our environment. Highland Electric Fleets is helping school districts across the state and the nation transition from diesel-powered buses to clean, electric school buses. This shift is not only reducing harmful emissions and improving air quality for our children, but it’s also cutting costs for school districts over the long term by lowering fuel and maintenance expenses.

The success of companies like Highland Electric Fleets is proof that we don’t need big-government mandates to move toward a cleaner future. The free market is driving this change, and North Carolina is uniquely positioned to lead the charge. By offering school districts the opportunity to lease electric buses at no upfront cost, they’re removing financial barriers for schools and enabling a cleaner, more cost-effective transportation solution. This is the type of innovation we should be celebrating: one that provides real benefits for North Carolinians without forcing top-down regulations or burdensome taxes on businesses.

As we celebrate North Carolina Drive Electric Week, let’s remember that the free market—not government overreach—drives progress. Companies like Highland Electric Fleets are leading the way, proving that innovation and economic growth can go hand in hand with environmental stewardship. Together, we can continue to build a bright future for our state—one that ensures job creation, economic opportunity, and a cleaner environment for generations to come.
