John Hood: Why College Return-on-Investment Matters

RALEIGH — The University of North Carolina system enrolled more students this fall — about 248,000 — than ever before. But continued growth is far from ordained. Indeed, as America’s college-age population levels off and then begins to decline over the next decade, many institutions will see enrollment declines. Some will be forced by shaky finances to merge or shut down.

College majors vary widely in cost

It costs a lot more to train a future engineer than to train a future journalist. Some smart aleck might suggest the cost differential is entirely understandable, since a poorly trained engineer will tend to wash out of her profession while a poorly trained journalist might well rise to the top of his.

I’m living the American Dream. I grew up in the beautiful state of North Carolina, graduated debt-free from Meredith College, worked in my community to help my neighbors, and now have a career I enjoy that allows me to serve others. I value the freedoms we have that allow us to succeed when we contribute to society. My dream could turn into a nightmare if our representatives in Congress do not act to protect immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, like me.
