State Treasurer Exposes Hospitals' Overcharges in Cancer Drug Pricing

North Carolina State Treasurer Dale R. Folwell, CPA, released a report today finding that 340B hospitals billed state employees an average price markup of 5.4 times their discounted acquisition costs for oncology drugs. Hospitals generated average spread profits as high as $13,617 per claim on cancer drugs paid for by the North Carolina State Health Plan for Teachers and State Employees.

As the NC General Assembly nears the end of its legislative session, legislators are working on a massive state budget that includes a proposal to allow the largest healthcare system in the state to grow even bigger. That system, Atrium Health, has 67 hospitals throughout NC, Wisconsin, Illinois, and a multitude of other states. 

Hospitals take more heat from Treasurer, calls for change in billing practices

State Treasurer Dale Folwell is once again sounding the alarm on some nonprofit hospitals in the state, with a new report that shows low-income patients are being billed when they were eligible for charity care. This comes on the heels of a similar report released in October by Folwell, who oversees the State Health Plan for government employees, the largest health insurance plan in the state.

CON laws are too risky

I’ve long thought the North Carolina General Assembly should reform our state’s archaic and anti-competitive requirement for certificates-of-need. In the post-COVID world we are entering, however, CON reform is no longer just a good idea. It’s an imperative.
