After the GOP-majority General Assembly saw its original set of electoral districts thrown out by the courts, lawmakers tried again. Their new legislative maps were accepted. A three-judge panel rejected the Republicans’ newly crafted congressional districts, however, and enacted a “remedial” map for the 2022 cycle.

A multi-year investigation led by law enforcement agents with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Securities Division with the assistance of the US Postal Inspection Service ended Tuesday with Forsyth County Superior Court Judge David Hall sentencing Russell Joseph Mutter to a minimum of 16 years, 3 months and a maximum of 22 years, 5 months in prison for a scam in which 12 victims – most of them elderly – lost over $3.3 million.

Governor Cooper encourages NC families to file federal income taxes to access full benefits of the child tax credit

With tax season quickly approaching, North Carolina families are encouraged to file their federal income taxes to ensure they access their full, expanded Child Tax Credit, as well as other federal benefits. Many families received about half of their tax credit payments in monthly payments in 2021 but will receive the rest of the money they are owed by filing their federal income taxes this year.

Several weeks ago, I wrote a column pointing out that Republican-led states outpaced Democratic-led states in population growth last year. Indeed, some blue-tinted places such as California, New York, and Illinois had a net outflow of residents while red-tinted places such as Florida, Texas, and our own state of North Carolina had a net inflow.
