RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation.
State's Piedmont Passenger Rail Service Resumes
This week, people traveling between Raleigh and Charlotte have an additional option with the return to service of Piedmont trains 73 and 76.
NCDOT had suspended operations of the state-operated passenger rail service due to the impacts of COVID-19.
To ensure passenger and crew safety, Amtrak has enhanced cleaning procedures and is requiring all customers in stations, on trains and thruway buses to wear facial coverings. The number of riders per train is also limited to make sure passengers can socially distance.

NCDOT Mobi Awards Presented
Last week, the department honored North Carolina communities that developed the state’s best multimodal projects.
The NCDOT Mobi Awards, which started last year, honor transportation projects that improve the economy and enhance the quality of life in North Carolina communities. Projects had to combine the use of at least two transportation modes such as aviation, bicycle, pedestrian, ferry, public transportation, rail and roadway.
More than 60 projects competed in this year’s NCDOT Mobi Awards. To see a full list of this year’s winners and honorable mentions, go to the department’s website.
Senator Charles W. Albertson Highway Dedication
A section of Interstate 40 in Duplin County has been dedicated to a former North Carolina state senator. Two highway signs now proclaim a couple miles of the interstate as “Senator Charles W. Albertson Highway.”
The former senator served 22 years in the state’s general assembly, making him the longest serving legislator from Duplin County.
