Sans Souci Ferry Service Resumes

The Sans Souci ferry, one of only three remaining inland cable ferries in North Carolina, is in service again. The June suspension of the ferry service, which crosses the Cashie River in rural Bertie County, was due to COVID-19-related budget issues.

NCDOT employees will be temporarily staffing the San Souci ferry until a contract for a private company to operate it can be awarded in the next few weeks.

Department Projects Win Regional Awards

Three transportation projects in North Carolina are among the best in the Southeast, according to a regional transportation organization.

The Surf City Bridge Replacement, the Marc Basnight Bridge – which replaced the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge – and a project to use drones to deliver health care supplies have been recognized with America’s Transportation Awards by the Southeastern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

All three NCDOT projects will be eligible for national awards, including one that allows you to vote starting next month.

NC Bridge Needs Your Vote in Photo Contest

You can help North Carolina get more recognition with a vote happening now. A photo of the Marc Basnight Bridge is a contender in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ viewer’s choice contest.

Your vote could help boost the bridge’s chance to win. Voting online ends this month.
