North Carolina is a diverse state and that diversity is our strength. It is troubling to see the continued politicization of important state institutions, particularly higher education. The UNC Board of Governors should consider how a diverse college campus makes our university system the ‘Crown Jewel’ of North Carolina. Instead of joining in the culture wars, North Carolina should focus on fully funding our university system and creating an inclusive environment where every student has the attention and opportunities they deserve.
Our state is as diverse as it’s ever been. Our universities are charged with preparing younger generations for life and work after college. Without diversity-focused programs and staff, we are leaving students with fewer tools to understand one another, thrive in the workplace, and become good citizens.
