On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-11th District, was cited for possession of a dangerous weapon after having a loaded handgun at the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Police say that Cawthorn cooperated with authorities after an agent found the weapon in a bag and Cawthorn said it was his.
In late March, a super PAC started by U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s 2020 Democrat opponent, Moe Davis, endorsed Wendy Nevarez in the Republican primary for N.C.’s 11th Congressional District. The American Muckrakers PAC — also known as the Fire Madison Cawthorn PAC — encouraged Democrats to switch their affiliation to unaffiliated and vote for Nevarez.
Being giddy about the possibility of barring Madison Cawthorn’s attempt to return to Congress is not a good reason to do it. Unfortunately, canceling somebody, often merely for speech, is an increasingly common tactic in today’s raucous political climate.
When Carolina Journal first reported first-term U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s intention to abandon his current district next year to run in an adjacent one, CJ quoted Cawthorn as saying his decision was part of “a strategy to increase conservativism in North Carolina.”
