The N.C. Supreme Court has agreed to take up a lawsuit challenging North Carolina's voter ID law. The high court's decision removes the case from the state Court of Appeals and places it on a faster track for final resolution.
On Tuesday, December 8 the Supreme Court of North Carolina issued an order to halt candidate filings for the 2022 election and delayed the primary. The new primary will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.
The order also states, “Any individual who has already filed to run for public office in 2022 and whose filing has been accepted by the appropriate board of elections, will be deemed to have filed…”
A new filing period has yet to be established by the State Board of Elections or N.C. Supreme Court.
Chief Justice Paul Newby became the 30th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina over the weekend. He took the oath of office shortly after midnight, administered by Superior Court Judge Andrew Heath in the Newby home. Chief Justice Newby holds the highest judicial office in North Carolina and heads the Judicial Branch, the third and co-equal branch of state government. A formal ceremonial investiture is scheduled for January 6, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. and can be viewed from the Supreme Court’s YouTube page.
