TurboTax Owner to Pay $4.5 Million to 150,000 NC Consumers in Settlement

TurboTax Owner to Pay $4.5 Million to 150,000 NC Consumers in Settlement

(RALEIGH) Attorney General Josh Stein today announced that 150,074 North Carolinians who were tricked into paying for free tax services by TurboTax will begin receiving checks from TurboTax’s owner, Intuit. The payments are the result of a $141 million multistate settlement that Attorney General Stein reached with Intuit in May 2022. North Carolina consumers will receive $4,582,249 million from the settlement.

People who are eligible for payment do not have to file a claim. Eligible North Carolinians will be contacted by settlement fund administrator Rust Consulting via email and will receive their checks in the mail during May 2023.

“I’m pleased that more than 150,000 North Carolinians will get back the money they were tricked into paying when they filed their taxes,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “My office will hold accountable businesses when they deceive people to make money.”

Attorney General Stein was on the executive committee of states investigating Intuit, along with the Attorneys General of New York, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington. In 2022, he and all 50 states and the District of Columbia reached an agreement with TurboTax for deceiving people into paying for tax services that should have been free.

Eligible consumers include those who paid to file their federal tax returns through TurboTax for tax years 2016, 2017, and 2018 but were eligible to file for free through the IRS Free File Program. The amount each consumer receives will be based on the number of tax years for which they qualify. Most consumers are expected to receive between $29 and $30.
